30 June – When we’re Angry!!!

Whenever and wherever we are in contact with other people there is usually ample potential for disagreements, misunderstandings, disputes and outright strife. Being part of a large family, a parent of six children and also a pastor of churches I have unfortunately witnessed and been amongst more than my fair share of disputes and upsets.

Sadly most of us have experienced the brunt or have been the instigator of a disagreement, and therefore we know that even if it feels good initially to vent our angst about a situation or at a person, no real good comes from arguments and strife.

We weren’t made to live in contention and surrounded by anger and disagreements because medically, emotionally and spiritually it damages our health, our relationships and the essence of who we are.

The bible has some wisdom on how to handle strife and disputes and if we want to live peacefully, be taken seriously and have healthy relationships with others we would be wise to heed God’s words. God says, “a gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare, and to “have nothing to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels” (Proverbs 15:1; 2 Timothy 2:23-24).

Most living things like sweet substances and peaceful environments, and as the old saying goes, “you can catch more bees with honey than with vinegar”. In other words we can attract more people and have a greater effect and impact on people and the world around us when we choose to be agreeable, nice and not always on the defensive and ready for a fight.

Next time you are facing a disagreement or you’re tempted to vent your feelings in an unproductive way, take the time to pause and ask God to help you to get your heart, mind and mouth under control before you act and speak. Then choose to respond and express your thoughts and feelings respectively and gently, remembering a gentle answer deflects anger, while harsh words produce quarrels.

Prayer: Lord please help me to respond to people and situations with grace and gentleness. Let my words and actions be one’s that defuse a fight and deflect anger today. In Jesus name Amen

29 June – Christmas Everyday!

simple plan christmas everyday

My husband is counting down the days and regularly lets people know how many days and weeks it is til…not our next holiday, someone’s graduation, or a special friend visiting. Nope, he’s counting down the days till Christmas. It is now 179 days until Christmas. Why does he do this? Because in our house we love Christmas.

We love Christmas because it’s a day set apart to remember and be thankful for Jesus and all that He has done for us.

We love Christmas because it’s a day dedicated to giving and blessing others, and it draws friends and family together as we all make an extra effort to get along.

We love Christmas because you get to eat your favourite things, on your best dishes, with all your creative decorating ideas being laid out on the table and around your home.

We love Christmas because it’s awesome to watch the the kids so full of excitement and joy.

We love Christmas because we get to have fairy lights, candles, music and lovely things all day long.

It makes me wonder why don’t we celebrate a little more like it’s Christmas everyday?

So what if tomorrow we got up and effort into the day being special, joy filled and special for ourselves, our friends and family, even just a little like we do on Christmas day?

What if we took the time to give thanks to God for all that He has done and read His word, and treasured its message just like we do at Christmas time. What if we took the time to read it as a family, recounting the excitement, lessons and meaning held within its pages?

What if we played games and ate around the table together, letting each other know how important and special they are to us, just like we hopefully do on Christmas day. What if we make the extra effort with those in our world, every day like we do on celebration days?

Consider for a moment the things you love about Christmas, (or would like to love about Christmas). Then decide to duplicate those things throughout the whole year? Why not bring a touch of Christmas’ joy, love and peace into every day of the year?

Here’s a few ideas to help get you started:

1. One of the best ways to celebrate everyday is to create a party atmosphere at home. Fill your home with flowers and music and just have a good time. Jesus said “He came to give us a full and abundant life,” (John 10:0) which means we have heaven’s permission to make the whole of our life a party and celebration if we want to. It’s okay to celebrate every day!

2. Dance, sing, and celebrate. When we share our enthusiasm and make the effort to celebrate it spreads joy to others.

3. Be spontaneous and break the routine that can so easily crowd out the sense of celebration in all of us. Remind yourself just how wonderful life can be. We all have something to celebrate, it’s just that sometimes we have to let ourselves relax and let go enough to enjoy life and if need be change our attitude.

4. Draw close to Jesus, read His words, think about why He came, and get to know Him more deeply for yourself. For it’s in knowing and being connected to Him that we find the true source of joy, and completeness. It’s in Him that we find the reason and ability to celebrate like its Christmas everyday, as His love is shed abroad in our hearts.

“And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us. For at just the right time, while we werestill powerless, Christ died for ” (Romans 5:5-6)

So grab the fairy lights, turn the music on, and set the table for mealtimes as if you were having a celebration. Enjoy your food and treat yourself every now and then, like it’s Christmas. Bless those in your world, even buy them a gift, send a card or message them just because you can. And most of all celebrate and get to know Jesus – the one whom Christmas is all about in the first place!

Let’s not wait another 179 days till it’s actually Christmas day to tell the special people in your life what they mean to you, because each day is in fact a gift from God to be enjoyed.

Prayer: Lord please help me to stay connected to you, so that your life and joy flows into my life. I want to celebrate life, like it’s Christmas everyday. Show me where I may need to change my attitude, or need healing so that I can look forward to every day just like it’s Christmas everyday. In Jesus Name Amen.

28 June – I AM!

i am who god says i am

I love it when God speaks to us and we hear what He is saying. Recently I was spending some time with Jesus, together with some others when I heard God speak to my spirit and say, “What am I speaking to you; who do I say you are?” It made me stop and think, because who God says we are, and what He is speaking about us is pretty important. He calls over us what is written in our books in heaven, and it’s up to us whether we are listening or not.

Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”(Psalm 139:16)

The bible says He rejoices over us with singing, which makes me wonder what He is singing over us. What song does He specifically sing over us that speaks out what He is calling us to be and become? For He is, “The God who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not.” (Romans 4:17)

When we hear what He is saying and receive and take hold of it, something creative, dynamic and powerful happens on the inside of us. If we listen and take hold of what God says we start to echo back or “sound back” to God our “song” and what He says about us. It’s like the deep things within us, calling to the deep things in God – deep calling to deep!

The bible says it this way, “Deep calls unto deep at the noise of your waterfalls; All Your waves and billows have gone over me. The Lord will command His loving-kindness in the daytime, And in the night His song shall be with me.” (Psalm 42:7-8)

“The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.” (Zephaniah 3:17)

It’s not just about having head knowledge of what “God says about us or that He calls us this or that.” God deposits what He specifically calls us in our spirits, and then we get revelation in our minds. That’s why sometimes we may get a sound or a song that we simply have to let out. It’s our spirit wanting to “sound back” to God what He has called and sung over us. That may sound strange to some, but we are more than flesh and blood; we also are spirit, and it’s our spirit’s that “hear” from God first, and then our minds receive revelation of who He is, and who we are.

An example of this happened while having my regular quiet time with God a few years ago. I started to see myself running long distances and then God started to call and speak over me, “you’re a runner”. I wondered what on earth He was talking about. But He persisted over several weeks until I chose to listen and respond. Then I started to see and speak about myself like He was. I brought running shoes and began a running program. Today I’m not an Olympic athlete but I do run most days, and I no longer run for a few minutes but for kilometres at a time.

God called something over me about whom He said I was, and I responded by getting in agreement with what He had said. This caused something dynamic and powerful to go off on the inside of me.

What God called me superseded anything I might have called myself. It superseded my inability and replaced it with His strength and consistency. What He called and sang over me went beyond my fears and doubts, to replace them with His confidence and endurance, and today I am the fittest, strongest and healthiest I have ever been.

Today “who does God say you are?” What has God deposited on the inside of you that you need to listen to and “sound” back to Him. Receive and respond to His call today and become all that He is singing over you to be.

Prayer: Lord please help me to listen to what you are calling me, so that I might hear and respond back to you. In Jesus name Amen.

27 June – What others think about me.

what others think

Even when we rationally should know better, we can still care too much about what other people think of us. It can control what we think about ourselves, our actions, responses and beliefs, and the out working of those beliefs. We can get disappointed because we want to be understood, valued and accepted and we can get then get defensive when we feel we aren’t, especially around those we want to prove our worth to.

Recently I felt God speak to me and say quite simply, “we must get free of this tendency to care about what others think”. Because left to grow and develop that thinking will cause us to become intimidated, fearful, anxious, and limited. The root of this caring is no doubt found in our self worth and esteem as a person and how we view ourselves both in our eyes, God’s and other peoples.

What I have discovered is that when we understand who and how God has formed and created us, and the plans He has for our lives the more focused on the positives and what really matters we will be. Spending time in God’s presence and taking time to read His words in the bible, which tell of how He feels about us all help to shape the view we hold of ourselves. Plus determining the type of people we will associate with and that they are positive and encouraging us to continually cultivate our potential.

There is always going to be voices speaking and trying to shape our identity – the question is whose voice are we listening to? Who is shaping our thoughts about our life? Who are we listening to about what our future looks like and how much we are loved and valued?

God’s voice always speaks hope, love and the future we have in Him. He speaks success, overcoming, and us becoming all we were created to be. He continually in His Word encourages us to have a success mentality, because as we see ourselves succeeding we will gravitate towards success and positivity, which as a byproduct causes us to be at peace and ease with people. We then no longer strive to exert our prominence, worth and value because we are trying to validate and/or prove ourselves.

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10)

“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. (Romans 8:37)

For this is how much God loved the world—he gave his one and only, unique Son as a gift.So now everyone who believes in him will never perish but experience everlasting life. God did not send his Son into the world to judge and condemn the world, but to be its Savior and rescue it! So now there is no longer any condemnation for those who believe in him.” (John 3:16-18 TPT)

Today take a few moments to ascertain whose voice you are listening to and how much you are limited by your concern of what others think. Plus more importantly are you listening to God speaking about who you are and what He knows about you, and then choosing that what He thinks of you will be what matters most.

Prayer: Lord please help me to grow to listen to your voice and word on what you say and think about me more than anyone else. In Jesus name Amen.

26 June – Your future is spotless

spotless future

There is a saying that, “no matter what a persons past may have been, their future is spotless”.

It’s what we do with what we have before us and in front of us that really matters, especially when you have given Jesus your past with any of it’s mistakes and mess-up’s and asked for His forgiveness. He says when we do that He will take our sins and removes then as far as the east is from the west. Which means it’s not God who is reminding or beating us over the head with our mistakes and our not so great past, but ourselves, others or the devil.  The bible says that there is now no condemnation for those who know Jesus. He doesn’t point the finger, condemn or hold a record of our wrongs once we have confessed and asked for His forgiveness. Our future’s are spotless, we have a clean slate, a blank page and a way forward.

“So now the case is closed. There remains no accusing voice of condemnation against those who are joined in life-union with Jesus”. (Romans 8:1 TPT)

Yet how often do we not actually live in this freedom? How often instead when we get quiet and alone by ourselves do we doubt our freedom, God’s forgiveness, and our worthiness? We hold the record of our wrongs, and it’s this record that limits, burdens and makes us feel and think we cannot be any different, that our life has been mapped out by our mistakes and things can’t change.

However I want to encourage you that when Jesus says we are forgiven He means it. He gave everything He had to purchase our freedom and forgiveness and if He says we are free then we are. Nothing in heaven, on earth or beneath the earth can separate us from His love, and if you’d only start to believe what He says about your life and future I can guarantee it will change how you look at yourself in the mirror, how you think, and how you approach your future. Because when you grasp hold of the truth of your forgiveness and understand that you are worthy and in right standing before a Holy God it can’t help but make you bolder, more confident, and willing to believe for what everyone else may think is impossible. The limits come off, the loneliness and fear dissolves, the hurt disappears and you start to emerge as a brand new person.

Today don’t waste another minute thinking less of yourself than you ought. Instead make the decision to come to Jesus so that you can off load the rubbish, self-doubt, mistakes, and feelings of unworthiness and fear, and receive in return His forgiveness, cleansing, hope, love, and new purpose and meaning. I can guarantee from personal experience it will change your life and your future self will thank you more than you can imagine.

“As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us”. (Psalm 103:12 NIV)

“There is nothing in our present or future circumstances that can weaken his love. There is no power above us or beneath us – no power that could ever be found in the universe that can distance us from God’s passionate love, which is lavished upon us through Jesus”. (Romans 8:38-39 TPT)

Prayer: Jesus I come to you and give you all my mistakes, fears and my feelings of unworthiness. Please wash me clean from the inside out and transform my life. I give it to you today and ask you show me what my future looks like through your eyes. In Jesus name Amen.

26 June – Your’e going to be okay

it's okay

Those words, “its all going to be okay” are what many of us need to hear on a regular, if not daily basis. Because sometimes lets face it we all feel like things are not in any way, shape or form okay!

The night we heard that my younger brother Shaun’s plane had not arrived at its destination and was missing was probably one of the worst nights for all my family’s lives. We sat waiting and waiting, answering phone calls and praying and hoping that we would hear some good news. In the midst of this time I heard God’s quiet still voice say something to me. He said “its going to be okay. It’ll be really hard for a while, but you’re going to be okay.” Shortly afterwards we got the call to hear that Shaun’s plane had crashed and there were no survivors.

I’ve learnt that even in the midst of really hard times God is there. We may not understand why or what is going on at the time but what I’ve discovered in the middle of things we don’t need to focus on  why’s and what if’s – sometimes there is no easy answer to why things happen . What’s important in the middle of things is that we recognise that we are not alone, and  regardless of how we feel or what it looks like God does care about us and if we hold onto Jesus regardless of the why’s, what if’s and crazy things that happen around us, we are going to be okay.

Today whatever sort of day you are facing, know you are never alone because God is with you and He cares. You may have a few bumps and bruises, and even some wounds that will take time to heal.  You will get some faith muscles you didn’t have before and learn some lessons you might wish you hadn’t had to learn quite so painfully, but keep walking, keep looking to Jesus and you will be okay!

Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)

Prayer: Lord thank you that you care about me and that you will never leave me to handle life’s circumstances alone. Help me to remember that today. In Jesus name Amen

24 June – Keep going!

keep going

God has His ways of revealing our hearts to us and then journeying with us so that we can live in freedom and grow past the things that could easily otherwise cause us to get “stuck”. He doesn’t want us to ever feel stuck or that things are impossible. Instead he wants us to trust Him and know that He always has a way through, a solution, and the power needed to change the seemingly impossible.

More than ever lately I am seeing how much we need to “Let go and trust in Him”. At times we may feel like we are not going anywhere, or developing, growing or achieving anything. But if we consistently spend time with God and follow what His Word says we will grow and be transformed, because God has promised He will perfect the good work He has begun in us.

The key is to keep going; to keep walking and to keep looking ahead.

To not fall into the trap of judging how we are progressing by the progress we make in one day, one week or even one month.

Our walk with God is a long walk and even though we may be in a hurry for quick fixes and results, God is not! He is in the business of revealing, renewing, and if necessary restoring us, His masterpiece; and masterpieces take time, gentleness, patience, perseverance and persistence. All of which God has an endless supply of.

Today if you are feeling frustrated with your progress or how long the journey to where you want to go is taking, be encouraged. Keep walking; keep talking and listening to Jesus and reading and following His Word, and you will get there. It’s not over, and you will be growing and changing even if you can’t see it yet, for God has promised He will complete the good work He has begun in you until it is completed.

“For I am confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will continue to perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 1:6)

The Lord will perfect that which concerns me; Your mercy, O Lord, endures forever.”(Psalm 138:8)

Prayer: Lord thank you that you are faithful and don’t give up on us. You are faithful to complete that which you have begun in us, and only need us to be willing and obedient to your direction and guidance. Please help me to keep walking step by step with you every day, trusting that you will perfect that which concerns me. In Jesus name Amen.

23 June – Surprised by God’s voice!

god speaks

God has something to say, and some things to show us. Through the ages people have heard God speak in a variety of ways. He spoke through an audible voice, through dreams, visions, circumstances, fleeces, inner impressions, prophets, angels and others ways, as well as through scripture.

God is still speaking, but we can fail to hear Him because He says things we don’t want to hear, or we are ignorant of the ways that He speaks.

When people say I can’t hear God, and I don’t know what He is saying I ask, “What was the last thing you felt God prompt or tell you to do?” Did you do it, or push it aside. God speaks, but we can ignore Him, and in doing so lose our sensitivity to His voice.

Sometimes we fail to hear him because His voice is drowned out by competing voices that throw us into confusion.

Jack Deere who wrote “Surprised by the voice of God” wrote that there are three voices besides the voice of God that can speak to us. They are:

The voice of our emotions

The voice of darkness

The voice that comes through the pressure we feel from family, friends and others.

We can easily get into confusion if we listen to these “voices,” rather than seeking to hear God’s voice speaking to us. Sometimes we can even go from person to person, and place to place looking for what we want to hear, rather than truly seeking God. There is always someone who will tell you what you want to hear when you look hard enough. We have to watch that our hearts are right and uncluttered with our own motives, issues, unforgiveness or fears, so that they don’t deceive us into hearing, doing and acting outside of what is God’s best for us.

God speaks in many ways; through the bible, through miracles, supernatural means, natural means, through our experiences, trials, visions, dreams, trances, by invading our minds with a part of a sentence or just a single word that we may not even understand at the time. He speaks to us by impressions, which often communicate knowledge, and by preachers, teachers, prophets, and others. It’s just whether we have ears and hearts to hear.

Today, ask God to speak to you in whatever way He wants to. It could be in reading the bible, and a verse just keeps on “jumping” out at you, or you are reminded of it later. It could be through an experience, another person, a vision or dream, or an impression or sense that God is saying something.

Write what you are “hearing” and seeing down. I practice in the little things as well as the big.  When you start to actively choose to listen you suddenly come to realise just how much God has been speaking all the time.

God calls and speaks to each one of us whether we know Him already, or have never even had a conversation with Him.

The bible says, “Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me whenyou search for me with all your heart. I will be found by you, declares the LORD”.(Jeremiah 29:12-13)

I can guarantee that if you take the time to listen and to seek to hear God’s voice you will. Maybe the question then is, “What will you do when you do hear Him speak”?

Prayer: Lord please give me ears to hear, and eyes to see the things you want to reveal to me. Forgive me when I have pushed you aside, or have listen to other voices rather than yours. I don’t want to do that anymore. In Jesus Name Amen.

22 June – But God!

but GOd

I am constantly reminded that there is so much more. When I reach one goal, God always has another area of increase He wants me to conqueror and overcome. That I would continually be going from faith to faith, not backwards or stagnant, but always forward and upwards.

Yet many times we can become satisfied only having the “entrée” in lives, in our relationship with God and others, in our day-to-day existence, in our dreams, aspirations, in our futures, when God says he has an unlimited “banqueting table” for us to enjoy. (Ps 23:5). He doesn’t want us to settle for less, for the just enough to get by, for that which is so far below what He has planned for our lives?

There is however  a reason why many often live with the “entrée” instead of the banquet, and the reason is quite plausible, even understandable. Life can hammer away at us; it can erode and sometimes be hell bent on demolishing any of the hopes or dreams we have. The circumstances of our lives can in fact leave us feeling despondent and disappointed with only enough energy to put one foot in front of the other and to just keep our heads above water – to simply survive.

But…and I say But because God always has a “BUT!” That is not who God says you are. That is not His plan for you. That is not the life that Jesus died and rose again to give you. “He said, “the thief (the devil) comes with only one thing in mind – he wants to steal slaughter and destroy. But I (Jesus) have come to give you everything in abundance, more than you expect – life in its fullness until you overflow.” (John 10:10 TPT)

When we feel stolen from, when it looks like destruction and chaos is going to overwhelm us then we can be sure that the devil has his hand in it. His whole plan is to steal from and destroy us.

But that’s where we mustn’t lie down and fall for his tactics and attacks upon our lives. Just as we would call for the authorities, we would barricade our doors, we would shout and demand help if a thief was attempting to break into our home or car, we must look to God and declare, “But God” is on my side!

God has a BUT and it’s this – When we call for help, He and His Word are our authority – nobody gets away with messing with His family; when we choose to look at what God says about our life, when we decide to listen to what His word says and believe that instead of the lies, the angels go to work – they are on call 24/7 on our behalf. (Hebrews 1:14) When we start to shout, “No” to anything that looks like it is going to steal from us, then we will start to see change. Then we will start to see the “But” of God go into action!

Our mind will start to be renewed to line up with what God says about our life, our thoughts will change and begin to rewire the patterns and responses in our brain, our body will begin to respond positively, our emotions will start to be at peace, and suddenly instead of being content to only eat the “entrée” we will begin to hunger after the banquet that God says is ours. The limits will begin to come off our lives and we will begin to see and step into new opportunities and start to see God’s destiny unfold, because “before we were even born, He gave us our destiny that we would fulfil the plan of God who always accomplishes every purpose and plan in his heart.” (Romans 12:2; Ephesians 1:11 TPT)

God always has a BUT. He always has a plan and He will always give us strength and the ability to walk out of the valley of limitations and disappointment into the light of our destiny in Him.

“Today I pray that the light of God will illuminate the eyes of your imagination flooding you with light until you experience the full revelation of the hope of his calling…. I pray that you will continually experience the immeasurable greatness of God’s power made available to you through faith. Then your lives will be an advertisement of this immense power as it works through you! This is the mighty power that was released when God raised Jesus from the dead and exalted him to the place of honour and supreme authority in the heavenly realms… “ (Ephesians 1:18-20 TPT)

Choose today to become dissatisfied with just enough and living a life of limitations. Seek God, His Word and His presence so that the eyes of your heart would be enlightened to the unlimited potential, opportunity and future that God has planned for you – because He always has a “BUT” and yours is waiting for you.

“Never doubt God’s mighty power to work in you and accomplish all this. He will achieve infinitely more than your greatest request, your most unbelievable dream, and exceed your wildest imagination! He will outdo them all, for his miraculous power constantly energises you.” (Ephesians 3:20 TPT)

“For you prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You have anointed my head with oil, my cup overflows.” (Psalm 23:5)
