26 Nov – Are You Angry?

Today, I was attempting to sort something out for our youngest daughter when the Lord had to remind me to keep my cool as I was seriously contemplating giving some people a piece of my mind. It was a reminder that whenever and wherever we are in contact with other people there will be potential for disagreements, misunderstandings, disputes and outright strife.

Sadly most of us have experienced the brunt or have been the instigator of a disagreement. Even though it may feel good initially to vent our angst about a situation or at a person, the fact is, no real good comes from arguments and strife.

That’s because we weren’t made to live in contention and surrounded by anger and disagreements. Medically, emotionally, physically and spiritually, anger and the consequences of any outbursts we may have damage our health, relationships, and the essence of who we are.

Fortunately, the bible has some wisdom on handling strife and disputes, and if we want to live peacefully, be taken seriously and have healthy relationships with others, we would be wise to heed God’s words. God says, “a gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare, and to “have nothing to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels” (Proverbs 15:1; 2 Timothy 2:23-24).

Most living things like sweet substances and peaceful environments, and there is wisdom in the old saying, “you can catch more bees with honey than with vinegar”. You attract people and have a greater opportunity to affect and impact others and the world around you when you choose to be agreeable, not easily provoked, nice and not always on the defensive and ready for a fight.

Next time you face a disagreement or are tempted to vent your feelings in an unproductive way, take the time to pause and then ask God to help you get your heart, mind and mouth under control before you act and speak. Some of the fruits of Jesus being part of our lives is peace, love and self-control so if you are having trouble, focus on Him and yield to his work in your life. (Galatians 5:22)

Then choose to respond and express your thoughts and feelings respectively and gently, remembering a gentle answer deflects anger, while harsh words produce quarrels. (Proverbs 15:1)

Prayer: Lord, please help me to respond to people and situations with grace and gentleness. When I need to get things sorted, please give me the wisdom to know the best cause of action and that you’d defend and fight for me when it’s not practical or appropriate for me to act. Let my words and actions be one’s that defuse a fight and deflect anger today. In Jesus name Amen
