1 July – Habits

Habit: A usual manner of behaviour or a behaviour pattern acquired by frequent repetition.

Studies show that 90% of our everyday behaviour is based on our habits. From the time we wake up in the morning to the time we go to bed at night, 90% of what we do is habitual behaviour.

Of the 11,000 signals we receive from our senses daily only forty of them are consciously processed.

That means how we treat people, how we spend our time and money, what we watch and listen to; 90% of the time we are on auto pilot. We do what we’ve always done.

That means that most of what we do is done out of habit.

An old Cherokee tale tells of a grandfather teaching life principles to his grandson. The wise old Cherokee said, “Son, on the inside of every person a battle is raging between two wolves. One wolf is evil. It’s angry, jealous, unforgiving, proud, and lazy. The other wolf is good. It’s filled with love, kindness, humility, and self-control.

“These two wolves are constantly fighting, “the grandfather said.

The little boy thought about it, and said, “Grandfather, which wolf is going to win?”

The grandfather smiled and said, “Whichever one you feed.”

ASK YOURSELF THE QUESTION?

“Do I really want to keep feeding this negative habit? Do I really want to stay where I am? Or “do I want to starve this and step up higher?”

If we will start feeding peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, humility and self-control, we will see those character traits developing in our lives.

Sometimes our habits are keeping us from God’s best and we may not even realize it.

The Bible says. “I say then: Walk in the spirit, and you shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law…And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passion and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. (Galatians 5:16)

When we “walk in the spirit”. We “feed” our spirit instead of our flesh. What we feed grows. What comes forth is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self control. (Galatians 5:22-23

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.” (Romans 8:5)

Don’t be on auto pilot today. Choose to feed your spirit and starve the things that keep you from discovering and experiencing God’s best for your life.

Prayer: Lord thankyou that you love me, even with my bad habits but thank you that you love me too much to leave me stuck with things in my life that diminish who you have made me to be. I choose to feed my Spirit today and not my flesh and any bad habits. You lead me today. In Jesus Name Amen.
