Recently, in the news there was a report regarding how a landslide destroyed a house, leaving its occupants narrowly escaping serious injury. Torrential rain had softened the ground, making the hillside unstable. It’s sobering to think how something that seemed solid could give way so suddenly causing so much damage and threat to life.. It reminded me of how life can feel steady and secure—until the “downpour” of pressure comes. When storms hit, any unstable ground in our lives can fail to support the weight of what we’re going through, leading to a “landslide” of chaos and uncertainty. It’s in those moments that we wonder: could things have been different?
Jesus spoke directly to this in His teaching: He said, “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” (Matthew 7:24–27 ESV)
Jesus doesn’t promise us a life free from storms. He tells us that the rain will fall, the floods will come, and the winds will blow. But He also assures us that if we build our lives on Him and His words and live according to His ways, we will be okay and be able to stand firm. The foundation of a life built on Jesus will withstand even the fiercest storms.
Reflect on Your Foundations
Take a moment today to examine what you’re building your life on. Is it the wisdom of the world, or is it the eternal wisdom of God? Are the things you’re chasing truly meaningful, or will they crumble when life’s storms hit? Jesus calls us to build our lives on what matters: love, kindness, forgiveness, compassion, and seeking His heart and ways above our own.
Today if you need to strengthen your foundations, start small but be intentional. Determine to spend 10 minutes in the morning and evening reading the Bible and praying. I call it bookending your day with Jesus. :)
Pause throughout your day to seek Jesus in the busyness and check in with Him.
Surround yourself with a community of other Jesus followers, who are also building their lives on Him. And look for ways to use your gifts to serve and bless others.
“And He (Jesus) is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” (Colossians 1:17 ESV)
Prayer
Lord, thank You for being my firm foundation. Please help me to build my life on You; and on your words and ways so that no matter what storms I face, I will remain strong and standing. Guide me to prioritise what matters to You and to reflect Your love and kindness to those around me. Thank You for always being with me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
