The Bible says, "who the son (Jesus) sets free is free indeed." (John 8:36), and that we are God's children meaning we are heirs and have an inheritance. Yet we can often live like a slave rather than someone who has an inheritance and is heir to the King.
Rather than living lives like royalty, as God says we are, we can live and think of ourselves far from blessed, free lives because we still think and act like we are in chains. Chained to our past, sin, disappointments, mistakes, fears and every other thing in our background, the devil can come against us with.
Thankfully Jesus doesn't give up on us. When we listen, spend time with Him and dig into His word, it's quite clear that when we have a relationship with Jesus, we have been given a clean slate – He calls us new creations, born again with a new life and absolute freedom from the things that previously held us in chains. (2 Corinthians 5:17; Romans 10:9) . We are sons and daughters of God, and the best part is that as soon as we ask Jesus to be part of our life, the new status we have as co-heirs with Jesus doesn't hinge on any of our efforts, but rather is founded in the promise and what Jesus has done.
The choice, however, is yours, and one you make every day – Will you live in slavery or embrace the freedom you have as a son or daughter, with an inheritance from heaven that is designed to impact everything you do and are on earth? Or are you thinking and acting like you are a slave who has to strive in human effort to be accepted, provided for and loved.
Today consider whether you are acting or thinking like a slave, striving for everything you achieve, or are you choosing to live as someone with royal blood and favour and is a son or daughter of God.
Jesus has broken every chain, which means we are longer slaves, so I encourage you to start living out your inheritance and the favour and freedom it brings today.
"And because we[c] are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, "Abba, Father." Now you are no longer a slave but God's own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir." (Galatians 4: NLT)
"For freedom, Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery." (Galatians 5:1)
"You haven't received the spirit of slaves that leads you into fear again. Instead, you have received the spirit of God's adopted children by which we call out, "Abba! Father!" (Romans 8:15)
Prayer: Jesus, thank you that when I ask you to be part of my life, you set me free and broke the bondage of slavery off my life. Please help me grasp what you have done for me and that I would choose to live out my freedom every day. In Jesus' name Amen.
