26 Feb - Fearless Faith: Walking the Tightrope with God

One of our daughter’s friends recently shared his incredible story. As a teenager he had fallen off a roof, broke his back, and endured months of surgery and rehab just to walk again. You’d think after an experience like that, he’d stay far away from heights. But instead, he did the opposite—he became a high rope walker.

Also known as a tightrope walker or funambulist, high rope walkers:

  • Perform daring stunts from extreme heights

  • Showcase incredible balance, agility, and control

  • Combine artistry, athleticism, and suspense

When my daughter asked why he chose such a risky hobby after his accident, he simply said, “I decided I was not going to run from my fear, but at it.”

Every time he steps onto that wire, he actively faces his fear of heights and falling—and overcomes it.

Faith Is Our Safety Harness

As I looked into how high rope walkers train, one thing stood out: even though they may fall, most use a safety harness that keeps them from serious harm. They might be jolted, hanging precariously in midair, but their harness holds them securely.

Life can feel like walking a tightrope. We all face moments when we must choose—run from fear or step forward in faith. But here’s the truth: we don’t have to do it alone. Just like the safety harness keeps a high rope walker from falling, God is our safety harness. He won’t let us be destroyed by life’s challenges and will help us face and overcome our fears.

God promises:"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." (Isaiah 41:10 NIV)

"We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose." (Romans 8:28 NIV)

"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you." (Deuteronomy 31:6 NIV)

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:9 NIV)

Stepping Forward with Confidence

Today, you may be facing a fear, a challenge, or feeling stuck. But you don’t have to stay that way. God calls us to be bold and courageous because He is with us! He is our safety harness, keeping us from destruction, guiding our steps, sending others into our world to help and support us and strengthening us when we feel weak.

Even if you feel like you’re walking a tightrope, remember—God is holding you steady. Take the step, face your fear, and trust that He will lead you forward into the good plans He has for you.

Prayer:

Lord, thank You that I don’t have to face my fears alone. You are my strength, my shield, and my safety harness. Please help me to trust You, to step forward with courage, and to remember that You are always holding me. No matter what comes my way, I know You are working all things for my good. Give me boldness to walk in faith, knowing that You go before me and will never leave me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
