We can become so focused on what we think others need to do or say that we start to believe we’re not able to make any changes or take action unless other people do.
Essentially we can allow our lives and futures to be highjacked by the attitudes and actions of others rather than depending on what Jesus says and our response to Him.
Jesus illustrated the power of not allowing our lives to become too dependant upon what others say and do in his encounter with a man who had been unable to walk for over thirty eight years. The man believed that he needed the help of other people to assist him in being healed and getting into the pools of Bethseda. A supernatural event would regularly take place where an angel would stir the pool and those who got into the water while it was moving would be healed. Unfortunately the crippled man was never able to reach the water in time as no one would assist him.
When Jesus came and asked the man if he wanted to be healed he didn’t reply, “Yes of course.” Instead he gave an excuse as to why he couldn’t. The man was so focused on others and what he needed them to do for him, that he nearly didn’t see what Jesus was offering him.
Fortunately Jesus redirected the crippled man’s attention off people and circumstances and drew his attention onto Him – the one who has all the answers. Jesus said, “Pick up your mat and walk” and at once the man did and was cured. (John 5:9)
No one except Jesus and the paralyzed man were involved. No angel, no pool and no helpers. Just Jesus and the man.
Our healing, freedom and abundance in life are not to be dependant upon other’s. Yes at times other people are called to help and walk with us, that’s a huge blessing. But we aren’t to be solely dependant on someone else praying for us to experience healing, or people providing for our physical and financial needs to be blessed. We aren’t to be dependent on receiving an apology or even visibly seeing the consequences for other people’s bad behaviour before we can forgive, or have our offer of forgiveness received before we can walk in freedom and healing.
The choice is ours, not other peoples.
Today ask yourself, “Are you content to be held hostage by the decisions and behaviour of others, or will you look to Jesus like the paralyzed man did, and in doing so receive all He has promised for your life. Focus upon Jesus and make your move!

“Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.” (Psalm 37:4-6)
“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” (Matthew 6:33 NLT)
“And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others”. (2 Cor 9:8 NLT)
Prayer: Lord thank you that I don’t have to depend on anyone or anything else but you to be made whole. I am complete in you and everything and everyone else is a blessing and a bonus. Please help me to focus on you today for all I desire and need. In Jesus name Amen
