This is a repost but as consistency is a lesson and character trait I am continually learning the importance of it’s worth reading and thinking upon again.
A few years ago I was thinking about “My Lid”. We all have lids in our lives that limit our potential and growth to become all that we have been made to be. Fortunately those lids don’t have to be permanent. We can “lift our lids.”
One of my lids was being consistent. I remember the day I was talking to God about my lids and He spoke to me and said…”You are not consistent enough”. I wasn’t impressed. I thought I was pretty consistent, but God started to show me the areas I WASN’T consistent, and that was a bit OUCHY.
I’d get all inspired and then run out of steam, or circumstances would highjack my good intentions and I wouldn’t get back to what I’d started out to do.
So I decided if I wanted to grow I had better begin to be more consistent even if I just started being more consistent in one area of my life at a time. As I have sought to do this I’ve discovered that when you make an effort and choice to be more consistent in one area of your life it starts to flow over to other areas of your life.
There is a phrase which says, “IN CONSISTENCY LIES THE POWER”
Here’s why:
Consistency allows for measurement.
Until you have tried something new for a period of time and in a consistent manner, you can’t decide if it works or not. How do you measure effectiveness if what you are measuring isn’t performed consistently?
It’s often minor tweaking instead of major overhauls that make the difference.
Consistency creates accountability.
The simple fact is that if there is a set time to report on progress it is often the catalyst that moves an initiative to a successful end
Accountability motivates us.
Consistency establishes our reputation and makes us relevant.
We can’t establish a track record if we are constantly trying new tactics. Many efforts fail before they get to the finish line. The problem is often that we simply didn’t stay the course to achieve the objective. Give it some time.
Consistency highlights our message.
People pay as much or more attention to what we do as to what we say. Our consistency serves as a model for how others will behave; our family, children, team at work, sporting group etc. If we treat something as unimportant, don’t be surprised when we find those around us doing the same.”
God has being showing me the power of consistency and that when I am consistent it has a flow on effect. When God draws our attention to something in our lives He just doesn’t leave us feeling like a failure. If we ask for His help He gives it. If we press into Him and abide in Him, He causes us to be like Him, constant, dependable and consistent.
All through the Bible you will see words like “continue” and “daily”. Jesus said if we would continue in His Word, then we would be His disciples. He said if we would continue we would know the truth and that truth would make us free (John 8:31-32).
Being consistent is a daily choice. It is a “Habit”
Cultivate the habit of doing successful activities.
Can you imagine what you can accomplish and the type of person you will be in the next 20 years with consistency?
Determine today to be more consistent. Try it in just one area of your life and over time see the difference it makes. For “in consistency lies the power!”
Prayer: Lord please help me to be more consistent and to harness the power that comes when I choose to daily and continually do those things that you outline in your Word, and which will enable me to fulfil my purpose and passion in life. Thank you that when I am weak you are strong in me, and that I can do all things in you. In Jesus name Amen.
