As I was running on a hot summer's morning this week, I noticed the shadows on the path ahead. In different circumstances, those same shadows might have seemed ominous—something lurking in the unknown, something to avoid. But in that moment, they were nothing but a welcome relief, a cool break from the relentless heat.
It got me thinking. How often do we see life’s challenges as dark, looming shadows? We brace ourselves, expecting hardship, uncertainty, or fear. But what if some of those moments aren’t shadows at all? What if they’re actually shade—and God using the situations we're facing as an opportunity for us to slow down; calling us to pause, breathe, and notice Him?
A Change in Perspective
David wrote in Psalm 91:1, “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” (NIV)
God’s shadow isn’t something to fear—it’s a place of refuge. His presence is the shelter we long for when life feels overwhelming. Just like I found relief in the shade on my run, there are moments in life where what we see as obstacles are actually invitations to pause, breathe, and encounter God’s peace and gain fresh perspective.
Maybe you’re facing a delay, a closed door, or a season of waiting. It might feel like a shadow of uncertainty, but what if it’s actually shade—God’s way of giving you space to slow down and see Him and what He wants to do in your life in a new way? What if, instead of running in constant busyness or fear, you chose to pause and rest in His presence?
What looks like a threat might actually be His protection. The shadows aren’t shadows at all—they are places of rest, moments to pause, reflect, and see God at work.
A Shift in Thinking
Feeling stuck or uncertain? Take a step back Could this be an opportunity to refocus on God? Maybe it’s not a roadblock—it’s a chance to pause and ask, What is God doing in me right now?
Feeling overwhelmed; facing an uncertain challenge? Instead of just trying to push through, step into God’s presence. Ask God what He wants to show you in this moment. His shade is where we find clarity and peace.
Feeling lost or like you’re in the shadows? Remember you’re never alone or out of His sight. Psalm 121:5: says, “The Lord watches over you—the Lord is your shade at your right hand.” (NIV).
Next time you find yourself in what seems like a shadow, I encourage you to pause. Look again. You might just find it’s not a shadow at all—but God’s shade and covering, and an invitation to rest in Him.
Prayer:
Lord, please help me to recognize those moments in life that can be used for good to slow me down and bring me closer to You. Help me to see Your hand at work, even in the seasons that feel uncertain. When I feel overwhelmed, please remind me that Your presence is my shelter and that I can rest in the shade of Your love and trust that You are leading me every step of the way. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
